RCMP regimental ball coming to Cornwall
A new event is coming to Cornwall, and it’s for a good cause.
For the first time, the RCMP’s Cornwall detachment will host a regimental ball. Regimental balls are a common way for RCMP detachments from across Canada to connect with their local communities and support important organizations.
The ball will take place on Oct. 25 at the Best Western Parkway Inn and Conference Centre.
“I think coming out of COVID, we’re looking for that connection with community and to show our support to the community,” said RCMP Cpl. Angelique Dignard. “Having a regimental ball allows us to mingle with the public… and, to build those partnerships. It allows us to open up the doors of the RCMP, which is usually a closed-door organization.”
The Children’s Treatment Centre was chosen by the detachment as the beneficiary for funds raised from the event. Event planners are hoping to sell 180 tickets for the ball.
“Our organizations really match in the sense of the public that we serve,” said Dignard. “It’s an employee-based decision and we have a lot of employees from this community, and they’ve seen the work that the Children’s Treatment Centre does.”
Helping to support the effort, franchise owner of Cornwall and Lancaster’s McDonald’s restaurants, Kyle Drake, has pitched in $15,000.
“There’s no government funding, it’s all community based,” said Drake.
The decision to support the Children’s Treatment Centre came from Drake’s staff members, who unanimously supported the decision.
The Children’s Treatment Centre provides support to youth and families who may have experience abuse. Since the 1990s, the centre has relied on the generous support of the Cornwall, Akwesasne, and SDG communities and does not rely on government funding.
